1885 Silver Dollar
The 1885 silver dollars which can be readily found today are going to be Morgan Silver Dollars. You may have heard of the 1885 Trade Dollar which was designed by the United States Chief Engraver William Barber, yet these coins are exceptionally rare. The Trade Dollar was produced from 1873 to 1885 with a fineness of .900 or 90% yet with a slightly higher silver content than the Morgan or the Seated Liberty. This coin was minted in Carson City, Philadelphia and San Francisco. After 1879 there were only proof examples made of this coin and that plays a major role in its scarcity.
The 1885 Morgan Silver Dollar however, which had a composition of 90% silver and 10% copper is far more prolific, yet can still garner a great deal of interest based on key dates, mint and condition. This coin was minted from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921 and is very popular among collectors today. The mint marks for the Morgan Silver Dollars are as follows:
- "CC" for Carson City
- "D" for Denver
- "O" for New Orleans
- "S" for San Francisco
- Unmarked indicates Philadelphia
